To be able to develop boundaried, safe and effective working relationships in order to support traumatised individuals.
The training will use the Trauma Informed Approach:
Know and understand about trauma (realise)
- Understand the potential for trauma to impact on a person’s interpersonal, emotional and cognitive functioning.
- Know the links between childhood trauma, adversity (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and the range of mental health diagnoses that trauma survivors attract.
- Be aware of why trauma is everybody’s business.
- Understand trauma survivors coping strategies (risks to self) as attempts to cope with the impact of trauma.
Recognise signs of trauma
- Understand the range of factors that mediate a trauma survivor’s response to trauma.
- Understand the potential for people affected by trauma to experience distress when memories of the trauma are triggered by situations/circumstances/relationships that bear some similarity to previous trauma.
Respond to the trauma
- Explore the professional relationship including recognising where the experience of trauma is having an effect on a person’s relationship with the worker and/or the service.
- Know what therapeutic or psychological support is available and where and how to refer them on.
- Explore the trauma-informed principles, to support the reduction of triggering trauma related distress.
Resist making it worse/ do no more harm
- Explore participants ability to tolerate being exposed to the trauma narratives.
- Explore how participants own experiences and values might be impacting on the ability to hear and pay attention to trauma narratives.
- Support participants to understand their own self-care needs.
